With the beginning of the 2011 - 2012 season upon us I decided to take a look back at the photo's I took during last season. This was the first year for Excel Cheer Academy and it was a success! All the girls were energetic and charismatic as you will see in the pictures.
These girls work hard with practices a couple times a week, learning tumbling, choreography and stunts. Competitive cheerleading includes lots of physical activity. As with gymnasts, cheerleaders must learn to tumble. They perform standing back flips, round flip flops, and full layout twists. Cheerleaders will also perform lifts and tosses. For example, “fliers” are thrown in the air, held by “bases” in different positions that require strength and cooperation with other teammates.
For the competitive cheerleaders', the goal is to be the very best. During their competitions, points are awarded for difficulty, technique, creativity and sharpness. The more difficult a mount or a stunt, the sharper and more in-sync the motions, the better the score will be. A fraction of a point could be the difference between 1st and 2nd place. So they practice constantly to master their routine. Cheerleading is a team sport so without cooperation and synchronization, first place is out of reach.
In our household Cheer is a Sport. Enjoy =)
